Temperature: 26.7°F

I first experienced the today's weather at about noon when I left for class. I was surprised by how warm it was, around 36 degrees F. Temperatures started to cool off slowly from there, but stayed steady in the lower 30's. Leaving class at 4:15 I noticed that there was currently snow falling and that by the look of the walks it had been for a little while before that as well. An area of low pressure to our north is most likely the cause of the precipitation. Overnight forecasts suggest that we could see around an inch of new snow accumulation by tomorrow morning. Strong winds from the north should cause temperatures to dip significantly, into the single digits most likely, and also make tomorrow much colder than today with highs in the single digits or lower teens.
The low pressure system over Lake Superior looks to be the center of mid latitude cyclone. Judging by the occluded front at the center I would say this system is losing energy and on its way out.
Right now we are in a trough of the jetstream. To the west there is also a trough that is extending down trough Oregon and California. This trough is bringing with it a cold and moist air mass from off the coast of Vancouver. This will bring snow to much of the west reaching as low as middle California. This storm has been named Winter Storm Q. Throughout the week this storm is projected to move east and bring significant snowfall to the much of the country, including us by about Friday. I will track the progress of this storm as it progresses.
